Sara Douglass 1957-2011

Sara Warneke, who wrote under the pseudonym Sara Douglass, lost her battle with cancer this morning, 27 September.

We're deeply saddened at this loss, and poorer that she is no longer with us. We are also richer for the time we had with her.

One of the first things Sara said, when we approached her about collecting her short stories, was that she probably wouldn't be here to see the book published. Sadly she was right. We were able to give her an advanced reading copy a couple of weeks ago.

Farewell Ms Douglass.

Our titles are available at over 30,000 wholesalers, retailers and booksellers in over 100 countries.

We are distributed through the Ingram Book Company.

Publishers Weekly gives a starred review to Lucy Sussex's Matilda Told Such Dreadful Lies. This is our first starred review (and hopefully the first of many)! The bit we especially love is

"Readers of all genres are sure to find something to fit their tastes."

Matilda Told Such Dreadful Lies will be available world-wide.

Matilda Told Such Dreadful Lies: The Essential Lucy Sussex

Lucy Sussex. Ticonderoga (www.ticonderogapublications.com),  $22.99 (514p) ISBN 978-0-9807813-7-3

This collection of short stories by Lucy Sussex is a surefire hit, featuring 25 reprinted selections that range from science fiction and fantasy to mystery and suspense. Readers of all genres are sure to find something to fit their tastes. In the compelling "Merlusine," a determined geneticist attempts to track down the mysterious remaining family of a famed "snake-woman" in hopes of mapping out their genes. In the alternate history "My Lady Tongue," a bold young woman encounters her first male outsider after being separated from her hard-core feminist community. In "Ardent Clouds," a risk-addicted filmmaker specializing in volcanoes goes to film one that is long dormant with the promise of something more. Despite some overlapping themes and ideas (most notably three back-to-back stories about cursed dolls), each story feels fresh and original. Sussex's style of writing is consistently engaging, and her protagonists strong and endearing--a winning combination. Readers will be hard-pressed to find a weak spot in this collection. (July)

The anthology is scheduled for publication in June 2011. The anthology will be available in hardcover, ebook and trade editions

Ticonderoga Publications is pleased to announce a new anthology series, The Year’s Best Australian Fantasy and Horror.

The first volume of this anthology will cover stories published in 2010, and will be published in June 2011.

The series is edited by Liz Grzyb and Talie Helene.

Liz Grzyb is the editor of the acclaimed Scary Kisses, Australia’s first paranormal romance anthology, and is Reviews Editor at Ticon4.

Talie Helene was News Editor for the Australian Horror Writers’ Association for four years, for which she was nominated for a Ditmar Award; she is also a musician and freelance journalist.

“There are some fantastic stories being published by Australians right now, and we’re looking forward to collecting the best of these in one volume,” says Liz Grzyb.

“There’s an amazing depth of talent in Australian horror fiction, and I can’t wait to showcase the best to a broader audience,” enthuses Talie Helene.

Ticonderoga’s editor, Russell B. Farr is excited by this project.

“While Australian publishers have had success in the past with Year’s Bests, consistency and longevity have been somewhat elusive. We’re hopeful that this series will be sustainable, and that sharing the workload will make this happen,” says Russell.

Lisa L. Hannett. Ticonderoga (www.ticonderogapublications.com), $14.99 trade paper (258p) ISBN 978-1-921857-01-0

Australian author Hannett's first collection shows off her fondness for lush imagery, unsettling concepts, indirect prose, and multilayered plots. "Carousel" features a girl trapped in a shed by her oppressive father; her attempts to escape elicit the sympathy of unusual rescuers. "Depot to Depot" spins the tale of a trucker who takes unexpected passengers on a strange detour. "Down the Hollow" looks at the sacrifices people must make to appease the Earth and the ways such a negotiation can go wrong. The 12 stories, all but one original to this volume, push boundaries and experiment with style, form, and meaning, rarely straightforward and often hovering between fantasy and horror. By no means an easy read, this is a collection for fans of weirdness, wonder, and oft-disturbing twists. (Aug.)
